Aluminium 6063 was used in fabricating the robotic arm mechanical structure. The 6063 type is an aluminium alloy. Its alloying elements include magnesium and silicon. Usage of the 6063 is mostly on door and window frames and roofs. Aluminium 6063 has the following benefits:-
– Easily shaped, cut, bent, drilled
– Corrosion resistant
– Affordable (although more expensive than steel)
– Heat treatable and can be welded
– Smooth surface fit for anodizing
Aluminium has higher strength to weight ratio, compared to other metals. For both 1 kilogram of aluminium and steel material, aluminium is stronger.
Its hard but easily shaped (bent) properties are ideal for this project. Mechanical structure and motor brackets can be formed using aluminium.
The robot arm weight is reduced as much as possible. This allows higher torque generation from the servo motors. Therefore, the choice for aluminium (light weight) with the stated dimension is evident.
Rated motor torques must be sufficient to lift the robotic arm links. If the torque is less than the calculated link or robotic arm weight, then it is not possible to perform movements.
The aluminium 6061 is also another popular choice for robot making materials. The 6061 is a precipitation hardening aluminium alloy, containing magnesium and silicon as its major alloying elements. It has good mechanical properties and exhibits good welding properties. It is one of the most common alloys of aluminium for general purpose use.
Another good advice for making robot structures is to plan properly the materials and costs beforehand. Constructing a robot halfway and then outsourcing for materials is not a very clever way to do things.
