PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride. Most people know of this plastic through the product known as PVC pipes, as PVC is very commonly used in pipes due to its durability and low cost. It is actually the third most used plastic due to its aforementioned cheapness and durability as well as malleability. Polyvinyl Chloride is also used in fabric. It is commonly used in raincoats, skiing equipment, and jackets. It is also used in alternative clothing to simulate latex, leather or rubber.

PVC fabric is often not the most comfortable of gear to wear, but wearers often say that nothing gives the same kind of protection and durability in harsh working conditions. An Amazon.com review of a PVC rain bib said the following of it “the simple fact of the matter is we haven’t found anything else that stands up to the rigors of hard, abrasive work… ” The review went on to say that PVC is the “standard” in his line of work and that the “The suits have proven to be surprisingly tough. Mine has stood up to briars, sharp straw, metal roofing tin and serious amounts of mud.”

People often buy furniture made out of PVC fabric. It is cheaper than leather and emulates it fairly well. PVC is easier to clean but it does not breath as well as leather, so it is not quite as comfortable. Many consumers find, however, that the lower cost is enough to make them go with plastic because the comfort of leather is not worth the extra price. Some have observed that PVC fabric cracks easier in sofas than leather. Many people dislike both leather and PVC fabric for couches as the fabric is cold to the touch in the winter and hot in the summer, which causes people to turn to different fabrics as alternatives.

An interesting twist on PVC furniture is using PVC pipes in the making of various pieces. Environmentally conscious people have started to recycle PVC pipes into furniture to save more plastic from going to landfills or recycled in less environmentally friendly ways. While these pieces might not be conventionally attractive, a lot of people enjoy the look because it shows compassion for the Earth while fitting nicely into modern décor. Couches, tables, and chairs have all been made from PVC pipes and are available for sale on the internet.

PVC fabric makes good materials for awnings, backpacks, and other camping gear.

PVC has many uses both in construction and in the home. PVC fabric provides a great substitute for more expensive fabrics while being more durable than other fabrics.
