Today, we are now seeing the effects of using fossil fuels to our environment, and to our economy. Coal, oil, and gas are called fossil fuels, and they provide around 66% of the world’s electrical power, and 95% of the world’s total energy demands. You will read in this article on how solar panels work.

With the rising costs of electricity nowadays, it is no wonder that people are looking into alternative means of obtaining electricity. One such way is through a solar panel.

What is a solar panel?

A solar panel is basically any type of panel that makes use of thermal energy from the sun in order to produce the much-needed electricity. Since we are now aware of what a solar panel is, we can focus our attention to the question at hand.

How do solar panels work?

The solar panels are composed of a lot of different solar cells. These solar cells are those that are responsible for converting the sun’s rays into usable electricity. The chemical element silicon is actually important for solar panels to work because silicon is the most common matter used for solar cells.

When the sun’s rays touch the solar cells, the sunlight is converted into electric energy. However, it needs a positive charge in order to actually produce usable electricity. In order to create a positive charge, the element silicon should mix with another element that can offer three electrons like boron. The combination of silicon and boron still has another position left for one more electron and these would basically produce a positive charge.

You might also be wondering what properties does sunlight have that can essentially create electricity. The answer to that question is that sunlight has various energy particles and one such particle is called the photon. Once these photons from the sunlight strike the solar cells, they allow some extra electrons to be knocked off their orbits. This, in turn, emits electric fields within the solar cells and it lures the free electrons into a current, which mixes with the silicon and boron combination. All these fusion of elements actually generates electricity.

It is important to note that if there are more solar cells, then more electricity would be produced. These solar cells mostly work best under direct sunlight and it is also most favorable if you would place the solar panel far away from buildings, trees or any other barriers. Just be cautious that there would be no shadow effects on your solar panel to make it work.

The solar panels would also efficiently work if you could build a rotating stand that could follow the sun’s direction all through the day. When you have a rotating stand, you could achieve the maximum electricity from your solar panel. Another way that you can maximize the electrical output of your solar panel is if you have a flat roof. In that way, the solar cells could be adjusted or amended as needed so that you could make the most of the radiation from the sun.
