Many of us struggle each and every month with the rising cost of electricity. It’s a utility that we all need, but do we need to pay these outrageous prices? In most parts of the country, people feel that they’re trapped in paying these rates since there isn’t any other power companies that service where they live. Ten years ago this would have been true, but with advances in technology you can now cut your power bill down drastically and even eliminate it all together.

Now, with solar technology, we’re able to harness the energy from the sun to power our homes instead of relying on the power grid for our energy. When most people hear “solar energy”, they automatically assume that it is too expensive and out of their reach realistically. That is actually not true anymore. When you decide to go solar, you have a variety of routes you can choose and each with its own set of pro’s and con’s. If you’re looking for instant gratification, companies like Westinghouse now offer do it yourself kits for setting up solar panels on the roof of your home. Westinghouse sends you the kit in the mail and with it includes the solar panels, the mounts for the solar panels, all wiring needed and a detailed set of instructions. Once all the solar panels are mounted on your roof, you wire all of them together and that wire will lead to your electrical box outside your house. Your meter will actually run backwards as you put energy back into the power grid, and most power companies will send you a check in the mail each month for the excess energy that you put into the system! So, if there’s ever a month you put more energy in than you use, you can expect a nice little bonus check for your efforts. The only downside of ordering these kits is the cost. For an average sized home, you could expect to spend over $10,000 to get all the panels you need to cover your roof and power your home entirely. The total cost depends on the size of the roof, but $10,000 is just a baseline. You could be up and running with solar in a week, but you just have to have the money to put up.

If you’re like most of us out there, paying that much money is simply out of the question. Don’t worry, there are other routes when deciding to go solar that don’t cost a fraction of what you’d expect to pay for the above. If you look around online, you’ll find that there are a few reputable sites out there that offer instructional videos on how to build your own solar panels at home. These videos will take you step by step and show you exactly how to make your own solar panels. You don’t need any expensive tools or anything, a lot of the supplies you’ll already have. The small cost for the videos is completely worth the money you’ll save when you’re able to cut down on your power bill or even eliminate your power bill.
