Most hobbyists or gardeners are familiar with portable kits which provide seedlings in growing cups which need to be watered and covered with plastic.

There are many different sizes of portable greenhouses or you may choose to make your own. Do it yourself individuals become very creative as each gardener has different needs.

The simplest portable greenhouse is a seed or a seedling placed into the ground and an empty plastic beverage container is placed over this seedling. The moisture for the young growth is created by the sun which produces the wet misting that you see on the inside of the bottle. The plastic bottle supplies water and protects the young plant from insects.

The purpose of a greenhouse is to house plants and seedlings in an insect free environment and provide the right amount of humidity and warmth for their growth or propagation.

It can also be used as a hospital for sick plants that need to be separated and reestablished. It is usually a temporary situation as the plants will be transplanted at their appropriate times into the main vegetable or flower garden.

After using various types of purchased or home constructed projects which are too small, it may be time to consider the next step upward to a larger portable lean-to. These may be purchased or made by you.

The light-weight portable lean-to is made with aluminum or PVC piping and covered with your choice of poly carbonate, shade cloth, or polyethylene film. This structure is attached to the side of a stable supporting wall which may be the house, garage, shed, barn or other support system.

The lean-to greenhouse is normally placed on the south side of a building taking advantage of the warm sun. The portable unit can be easily removed or dismantled to be placed elsewhere when the seasons of the year change in order to follow the sun.

This greenhouse style can also be made permanently; never to be moved. The construction materials include wood, steel, aluminum or plastic. The type of slanted roof and the three sides will determine the types of covers.

The advantages of this half-building is it is not as costly as a free-standing building. Utilities are easy access especially when attached to the house or a shed which has plumbing and electrical outlets.

Water is available for washing, cleaning, and watering plants and the electricity is handy for occasional night visits.
